Definition:
Performs responsible, varied work involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of beaches, dune systems, streets, sewers, water, sanitation and other public works facilities, and/or takes the lead in a very small unit; may be required to operate, check, service and make minor repairs to trucks and other road or beach maintenance equipment including but not limited to loaders, tractors with rake attachments, street sweepers, backhoes and other beach maintenance equipment; performs other related duties as required.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.

May assist in training new employees.

Receives, reviews and adjusts complaints.

Gives assignments to employees in a very small unit.

Performs responsible, varied work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants and other water service equipment.

Performs work involved in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of roads, beaches, pedestrian beach accesses, vehicle beach accesses and beach dune systems.

Performs hot or cold patching of damaged roads.

Installs, paints and maintains road and street signs.

Maintains records and files.

May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Knowledge of procedures used in making routine and complex repairs to public works facilities and the use of tools/equipment.

Ability to comprehend established routines, rules and regulations of a limited complexity.

Ability to work harmoniously with others.

Ability to operate and skillfully use specialized tools/equipment.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication. Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible as long as they can perform essential functions of the job after a reasonable accommodation is made to their known limitations. If the accommodation cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.

Requirements:
Two (2) years of experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewer, water, beaches, sanitation or other public works facilities or similar heavy construction.

 
Special Requirements:
Appointees will be required to possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.

 
Physical Demands:
Ability to work for long periods of time in emergency situations and remain on the job until all repairs have been made.
