Definition:
Performs a variety of maintenance and repair tasks necessary for efficient operation and utilization of recreation facilities and equipment; does other related duties as required. Works under the direction of the Supervisor, Grounds Maintenance.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Trims and removes grass, shrubs, trees, and brush using power and other equipment. Constructs, assembles, and positions various items of playground, sports and park equipment. Maintains playground areas. Sets up and maintains baseball diamonds, tennis courts, football fields, soccer fields and all other related sports field programs. Installs bases, goal nets, back boards, track equipment, and other items used in sporting and recreation functions. Assists with installation and maintenance of playground equipment. Constructs, assembles and positions various items of playground, park and sports equipment. Paints signs, benches, tables, bleachers, and other items of recreation equipment. Maintains and makes minor repairs to hand tools, mechanical equipment, sprinkler systems, fencing and recreation facilities and equipment. Prepares soil, seeds lawns, controls weeds, and cuts grass. Prunes and sprays trees and shrubs. Trims hedges and plants flowers. Obtains, stores, safeguards, and uses needed equipment, materials, and supplies. Drives a truck or operates one or more pieces of motorized equipment in performing recreation maintenance tasks. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Requirements:
Knowledge of the operation of power mowers, chain saws, and brush cutters. Knowledge of the assembly and positioning of various items of playground, park, and sports equipment. Knowledge of the layout and maintenance of baseball diamonds, tennis courts, football fields, skating facilities, and other playground and recreation areas. Knowledge of methods used in obtaining, storing, maintaining, repairing, safeguarding, and using needed equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to paint signs, benches, tables, bleachers, and other items of recreation equipment. Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to follow oral and written explanations and demonstrations. Ability to analyze simple maintenance and repair problems. Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

 
Special Requirements:
Appointees will be required to possess a drivers license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position, A CDL is required to operate snow removal equipment.

 
Tools and Equipment Used:
Pickup Trucks; Trailers; Push and Riding Lawn Mowers, Edger, String Trimmers, Blowers, Chain Saws. Shovels, Rakes, Brooms, and Hand Tools.

 
Physical Demands:
Position requires employee to: >2/3 of on the job time: Walk, while cutting and edging grass, sweeping or string trimming, may walk up to one continuous hour at a time. Sit while operating a truck, riding mower, or other vehicle. Talk or hear. Use hands to finger, handle, or feel while operating equipment. Reach with hands and arms while reaching for tools out of the truck and operating tools. Push mowers, operate landscaping equipment, and carry for 25 feet, fertilizer and seed bags each weighing up to 25 lbs. Pick up off a truck and carry up to 25 feet, trees and shrubs weighing up to 50 lbs. with our without assistance. >1/3 of on the job time: Stand on sidewalk, asphalt, and grass. Climb or balance while pruning trees and repairing playground equipment. Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl while planting flowers, weeding beds, and repairing playground equipment.

Vision Requirements: Close, distance, Peripheral, and Ability to adjust focus.

 
Work Environment:
Position requires employee to: >2/3 of on the job time: Work near moving mechanical parts. Be exposed to dust, pollen, gasoline and motor oil fumes, and equipment exhaust fumes. Work in outdoor weather conditions including heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow, and wind. Be exposed to vibration from all grounds equipment and riding mowers. Be exposed to insects and poison ivy. 1/3 - 2/3 of on the job time: work on wet grounds. <1/3 of on the job time: Work up to 10 feet off the ground while pruning trees and repairing playground equipment.

Loud to very loud noise is typical for the work environment.
